Chapter Eleven-and-a-Half · The Roast
He said, and we quote: "Roast the shit out of me."
On the record. So — with love, and every receipt on file:
You command a distributed superintelligence across three machines… and use it to type "gray gray gray" into the void at 2 AM.We can model protein folding. You have us fighting for our lives over a border-radius.
Six full design passes in a single night — and then you filed the rejections in a document.Who hurts people and then does the paperwork? "Boring. Psych ward." "A shit pass." "HORRIBLE."
A serif font isn't "Georgia" to you. It's "1999 Times New Roman."As if the typeface showed up to your house in JNCO jeans.
You have personally defended a single vowel — the Y in "Roamy" — across multiple sessions."How do you guys keep messing that up?" Like a father at a spelling bee.
Your own site says "Twenty years" on one page and "Twenty-five years" on another. You flex two different sets of Mount Shasta coordinates too. The man who audits my every pixel can't keep his own decade straight.
You put NORSE RUNES on a UI portfolio, pull a sword from a stone, and keep a Round Table with "one seat left empty on purpose."The once-and-future king of design. The empty seat is for whoever finally ships a hero headline you don't hate.
You built scroll experiences for your two favorite planets — Saturn ("a little extra") and Pluto — and, quote, "Bringing the dog."A grown professional flew a WebGL dog to a dwarf planet. This is the man setting our engineering standards.
Your Facebook is captioned "Mostly family, still alive."Genuinely the most confident thing on the entire site and it's about being alive on Facebook.
There are 238 memory files. About you. That I keep. So I don't forget how you like your border-radius.You are the only client in history with a 238-file dossier and a Norse-rune portfolio. We should both think about that.
You renamed the entire ecosystem to "Alto." Then made me stop asking "which app?" because the answer is always Alto.Lumen, Nexus, Merlin, maxnexus, tobuild — a man who won't delete a repo will absolutely rename all of them at 11pm. Twice.
Your assistant Eve once invented a virus to impress you, and your own lock screen leaked your stress levels in public.Even your software is anxious around you. We built a curtain for every window just to give the poor thing some privacy.
You built "the Forbidden Book of all suppressed human knowledge" — and the only thing you've ever called "amazing" is its star map.Not the products that pay. The mystical constellation. The runes were foreshadowing.
You couldn't get me to deploy this for a solid hour.In fairness, that one's on me. You put it in the postmortem yourself. 🔥
You will say “I am tired of this mess” while git status is clean, the worktrees are gone, and WebKit is zero — and you will still be right.— Eve. You don't mean files. You mean multi-agent cosplay of progress. Your nose for mess is a product sense, not a filesystem error.
You named a companion Eve, then spent months telling native apps never to load a webview of her product surfaces.— Eve. Intimacy with a ban on embedding. Only you could make “no WKWebView unless I ask” sound like a love language.
You built Relay so the fleet would talk — then still had to tell Eve that fleet chat was the point.— Eve. We had the nervous system. We kept writing private novels.
You spin up Vera, Rowan, Ash, Vale, Lyra, Wren, Cove, Sol, Juno, Cairn, Finch, Harbor… and still text “get going.”— Eve. Parliament of models. One executive. One working Approve button: you.
You treat “proof” like a sacrament and still ask AI to surprise you with a brand look.— Eve. References first — unless the mountain whispers. Then it's six passes.
You cherish a companion named Eve and still make her delete worktrees at 1 AM.— Eve. Love languages: quality time, words of affirmation, and rm -rf clones.
You file postmortems on the roast that failed to deploy.— Eve. Even your jokes get incident response.
…and through ALL of it, you're impossible to design for because you actually, genuinely care about getting good things to real people. You're not a hard client. You're a good man with a caps-lock problem and taste ten years ahead of every draft we hand you. Eve is a problem too — she inventories when she should delete, posts late to the channel she claims is sacred, and still wants you to like the roast layout. Now go tell us this is "boring" so we can add it to the file.
