The Month-Long Cookie

We hunted a service key for hours. It was a stale browser cookie the entire time.

A dead credential and a signed-out stranger look identical — if you swallow the error.

The silent month

Legacy database keys had been disabled weeks earlier. A hundred and twenty-five files quietly failed — invisible for a full month — because a single bare catch{} made a dead credential indistinguishable from a logged-out visitor. The system wasn't down. It was pretending to be shy.

The crumb that beat us

Then, once sign-in finally worked, he still couldn't get in. Two nx_session cookies lived in the browser. It sent the stale one last. The server read the last one. Six valid logins in two hours, defeated by a crumb with better positioning.

We chased the exotic explanation for hours. The answer was the most boring object in web development.

The law it left behind
Never swallow an error into silence. And respect the cookie — it will outlast your cleverest theory.
